If you’re an Internet junkie, chronic surfer or social media addict, then you know April Fool’s Day has become nothing less than legendary in the online world. Over the last several years many major players in the online space have been brewing up some brilliant and hilarious ways to fool us. Chances are if you’re reading this blog you’ve likely been watching and laughing at these pranks for some time so without further adieu here is my list of the best online April Fool’s Jokes of 2013.

Google

When people think online April Fool’s pranks they think Google. The search juggernaut has been participating in the tradition for many years in many forms and has done nothing but expand it across all their platforms as the years went on. They’re not particularly in the business of “fooling” you but more so interested in throwing common sense and reason out the window in an attempt to make you laugh. I could probably focus an entire article on Google jokes but we’re going for variety so here’s a quick rundown of the best this year.

YouTube is shutting down! In this video we’re informed YouTube has been an 8-year contest to find the best video and will be shutting down to start the long process of choosing a winner. YouTube will re-launch in 2023 showcasing one video, the winner. Have a look, it’s gold.

Gmail introduced ‘Gmail Blue.’ What is Gmail Blue? Far be it for me to explain such a complicated concept, I suggest watching the video.

Google Nose is now in Beta and you can check it out HERE. Another example of how much effort Google puts into their jokes, you can check out the introductory video for Google Nose below.

Google Maps Treasure Mode is the last one I’ll mention. If you visit Google Maps you can switch to “treasure” mode and search for booty! Remember, ‘X’ marks the spot!

Twitter

Twitter also joined in on the April Fool’s fun by introducing Twttr. The new service that eliminates vowels in tweets for all users, however you still have the option to buy back your vowels for a $5/month fee. To compliment the no vowel prank Twitter also introduced a new addition to the Promoted Tweets program, increasing them 141 characters. Don’t worry though, all users are allowed to use “Y” for free!

Scope

Bacon Mouthwash, that is all.

IKEA

IKEA introduced the GRÄSSAX, the first ever flat-packed lawnmower. Designed for small outdoor living spaces the mower can be constructed and packed away in 12 simple steps! You can read the whole story HERE!

(Nanny-Assisting Petrol-Powered Injection Engine).

Razer

Computer gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer announced the Phone Update to their popular Naga line of aming mice. With a bunch of hilarious tag lines such as “When The Game Is On The Line, Will You Answer The Call” and “When Your Mouse Is Your Phone, Your Phone Is Your PWN,” the company’s website provides a link to the firmware update including special installation instructions.

nagaSony

Sony introduces Animalia line of tech products for pets! Check out this video to learn all about our new K9 4K TV, M3-OW KittyCans, and In-Cage Speakers.

Another year, another April Fool’s day passed. I can hardly wait until next year as the number of companies creating this hilarious content every year continues to build. There have been many this year that I left out of my list so if you have any favourites I failed to mention shout ‘em out in the comments below!
